Bird's eye view of one of the Grindstone Creek wetlands down in Hendrie Valley, Royal Botanical Gardens. This is a scene that I photograph frequently when I walk there, and I’ve always had a mind to paint this vantage. As part of a 30-day painting-from-life challenge, I ventured there with my plein air kit and started the painting on site. By the time I was done, I had a purple-toned monochromatic value and composition study of the scene, and soon added colour on top of that, back in the studio.

I was going to add at least one person down by the bench, and a few people walking by as I painted joked about it, but then a number of vultures circled overhead for a minute or so, and I managed to capture the gesture of few of them in the sky. I figured I would just stick with the circling vultures as a bit of added interest to the scene. Painting started on-site September 30, 2024 and completed soon after - colour version finished by October 10, 2024
