Harbour Scene, Dubrovnik (Croatia)
Oil on board, depicting the historic harbour at Dubrovnik with moored fishing boats in the foreground and a substantial waterfront building, probably the former Arsenal, beyond. Executed in a restrained palette of muted blues, greys and ochres, the composition captures the quiet atmosphere of the old port beneath an overcast sky. Monogrammed lower left.
It's the mis-spelling of 'Dubrovnik' that appeals. And so I have left it as I found it. Maybe in some dialects it is spelt with an extra 'O'? I also like his signature OB, and the chalky shabby frame.
There are 2 of Mr O'Brien's oils in this room. I have more in other bedrooms. I like their dark colours. I suspect that the scene in Dubrovnik now has somewhat changed. I read recently that Dubrovnik has 134 tourists per resident. Quite unsustainable. Not an easy nut to crack though
