Anthony Matthews, who adopted the name 'Anton' in later years, was born in Cheltenham in 1925. He studied there and in Reading before embarking upon a career in teaching, becoming head of the School of Art at Rugby. Matthews served on committees in arts administration and exhibited widely, including works at the Royal Academy, The Royal West of EnglandAcademy, The Young Contemporaries, The Society for Education in Art, The Royal Cambrian Academy (of which he was a member) and the London Group. He lived in Chard, Somerset.
