A Pair of Silk Embroidered Naval Studies: H.M.S. Bacchante
Early 20th century silk and thread embroidery studies, framed as a pair.
An unusual and decorative pair of embroidered maritime studies depicting the British armoured cruiser H.M.S. Bacchante, worked in coloured silk threads on satin grounds with elaborate floral scrolling borders. The vessel is shown in profile flying naval ensigns, with the title “H.M.S. Bacchante” embroidered beneath.
Accompanying handwritten notes identify the ship as a Cressy-class armoured cruiser completed in 1902 by John Brown & Co., Clydebank, and record aspects of her service history including deployment with the 7th Cruiser Squadron, operations at Heligoland Bight and the Dardanelles, and later West African service.
The embroideries possess considerable period charm and likely relate to a sailor’s or family commemorative work, combining Edwardian decorative needlework with naval historical interest. Presented in matching glazed black lacquer frames.

These late Victorian/early Edwardian embroideries are great. Given to me by my father one Christmas. Probably unfashionable now, but I like that the information with the pictures gives them so much more life. Heligoland Bight, The Dardanelles, West Africa..U boats....such adventures from over the horizon!
