“The ‘Robosexuals’ series examines a cultural shift in which human intimacy is increasingly mediated and replaced by technology. As digital interfaces become primary sites of connection, emotional and physical closeness between people begins to erode, giving way to relationships that exist through screens, algorithms, and artificial companions. Across the series, human figures and robotic forms engage in moments of contact that are intimate, ambiguous, and at times unsettling. These encounters do not depict a distant future, but rather a present condition: one in which individuals turn toward technology as a more controllable and less vulnerable source of intimacy. The robot, in this context, is a machine, but also a projection of desire, loneliness, and the need for affirmation.”

Jasimen Phillips

Jasimen Phillips (b. 1986, Los Angeles, CA) is a Los Angeles–based contemporary artist working in Afrofuturist figurative portraiture. Her paintings explore the evolving relationship between humanity and technology, examining identity, power, and transformation through speculative futurism.

Phillips studied at University of California, Los Angeles and has exhibited at institutions including the Torrance Art Museum and the Santa Paula Art Museum. She has delivered invited talks at Loyola Marymount University and California State University, Dominguez Hills, including Cultivated Creativity in the Age of Technology and the workshop Apps of Empowerment, exploring art and humanity’s evolving relationship with technology.

Drawing on historical portrait traditions, Afrofuturist aesthetics, and contemporary visual culture, Phillips creates immersive, high-impact compositions that invite viewers to reconsider the human condition amid rapid technological and cultural change.
