In Ya Face Now Too!
Watercolour, acrylic, collage on paper
"The ‘Are you Offended’ series utilizes vintage racist Black caricature found throughout media from the 1930s and onward to question ideas of disrespect, to ask a simple question: ‘If I did this to your heroes’ images whom you deeply respect, would you be offended?’ The question is formulated through the use of mutilated paintings and drawings of revered paintings and photographs of the European Renaissance/Classical, Neo-Classical era.
The caricatures I create are knowingly and indirectly jeering and insulting the audience. They smile and laugh knowing they do not belong in the place they are now inhabiting. The work is offensive by nature to call into perspective the way in which Black people have been made fun of in the past and to this day. The series is a form of solace, a way to dispel the anger felt towards those who seem to regard my life as a Black Person as lesser than theirs. The series pulls their ‘people’ to the same level in which they viewed mine."
