Fat, Femme and Fierce

"My series titled ‘Sissy’ challenges rigid and archaic societal ideas of gender and body image, contributing to the elimination of heteronormative and homonormative stigmas. I portray men wearing wigs and women’s clothing and/or accessories juxtaposed with thick beards and hairy chests. I also portray plus-size bodies standing confidently in erotic clothing and gestures to challenge ideas about ideal sexual body types.

My artworks are performances of gender and erotic expression, providing a platform for both homosexual and heterosexual men to explore their masculine and feminine sides as one to combat femme-phobia and fat-phobia. I ask my audience to reevaluate their prejudices and confront their desire to explore their own gender fluidity.”

About the artist

Louis Trujillo

Louis Trujillo is an artist and curator born and residing in Colorado. He creates works in his private studio and a shared studio at Art Gym Denver. Identity is the recurring theme of inspiration for his artwork with explorations in gender expression, the unconscious, and family history. He received his B.F.A in drawing at Metropolitan State University of Denver where he was awarded the Nagel Art Thesis Grant and the Nagel Directed Studies Scholarship. He is a former member and PR Director of SYNC Gallery located in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe. His artwork is part of national private collections. He is currently employed by Art Gym Denver working in the membership, programming, marketing and gallery departments. He has co-curated numerous exhibitions in Art Gym Gallery and in Common Space Gallery.
