This self-portrait was painted the day following a confronting conversation about historical abuse. After 40 years, I found the strength to tell my story and afterwards I felt exhausted yet strikingly free. I later told my best friend about the conversation, and she cried with relief and joy. It was in that moment I decided to paint this work. Like my emotions the canvas is raw. The stance is defiant and demonstrates strength - after years of shame - I have survived. I usually straighten or tie back my hair, but to prepare for this portrait I got straight out of the shower and let my hair air dry to reveal my natural curls. Finally, I am starting to feel ok.
