Wren Woodward Sarrow (sarrowstudio.com) was born in Coventry, England, immigrated to the United States with her family at an early age, and became a U.S. Citizen in 2021. Living in the San Fernando Valley with her husband and two teenage sons, the visual artist has been widely exhibited in the USA and abroad. She currently manages the artists’ collective TAG Gallery, on Museum Row (tagallery.net). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Truman State University in Missouri (1991) and a Master of Arts degree from Ohio State University, where she studied Medieval, Contemporary, and American art history (1994). Sarrow earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Pratt Institute’s graduate program in Brooklyn, New York (2003). While her environmental activism, oil and watercolor portraits, and Styrofoam media artwork remain primary occupations, she complements these endeavors with curating and writing about contemporary art. Along with her husband, Jonathan, Wren founded artHYPE (artHYPE.net) in 2018. Now, a non-profit foundation, artHYPE’s mission is to amplify the artwork of visionary, humanistic, and underrepresented artists and to pass on creative skills to the next generation through youth art classes.
Statement
“I pursue the following objectives: connection and transcendence. The systems I use are intuitive, experimental, statistical, scientific and pattern sensing. I have a tendency to create natural forms. My program is color, my style is realism. I portray human bonding, understanding, and equality without violence. I am influenced by the people’s history, philosophies of justice, and the history of art.” Wren Woodward Sarrow
My visual artworks consist of three styles, pop with outlines and flat color, recycled Styrofoam installations with lights and paint, and naturalistic oil portraits. I include portraits of people from different backgrounds, who represent my friends, family, and myself. I am an intuitive artist, and create new forms, often based on dreams. I’m interested in humanism and environmental progress. I like the subjectivity of portraits and the illustration and science of green technologies. I work with oils, acrylics, water-based enamel, canvas, recycled Styrofoam, and LED lights. I keep experimenting.
