Wilmer A. Colón Echevarría (1963 Peñuelas, Puerto Rico)
He comes from a family with a multidisciplinary artistic tradition. He has diverse training, among them, fundamental courses from the School of Plastic Arts of Puerto Rico and a Master's degree with a specialty in Drawing and Painting from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. He has exhibitions in Puerto Rico, Argentina, Austria, Ecuador, Chile, Cuba, Italy, Spain, the United States and Honduras.
His work, although of an abstract tendency, tends to have overtones of the Caribbean vegetation that surrounds him. Likewise, its color is, to a great extent, a reflection of the high emblematic contrasts of that region of the tropics. In terms of the subject, it is of a philosophical nature, concentrating on the search for the purpose of the human being and the consequences that arise from this existential exploration.
In recent times he has been experimenting with recycled media, such as: X-ray plates, casino chips, tires, waste wood, vinyl and others.
Statement
I come from a family with an artistic tradition, therefore, expressing myself through art happens naturally. Initially the landscape was my expressive vocabulary, but eventually, it was abstracted to what it is today. The Caribbean colors and the organic forms are the mainstay in the scene, which sometimes reveals the hints of that original landscape.
Regarding the subject, I was always concerned about the philosophical and the intrinsic questions of the human being. Even when I captured figurative landscapes, I was motivated by the inner being. At present, this search has found fertile ground in expressions of color, plastic experimentation, in the use of everyday or recycled materials and in symbols. Today I tend to work in a small format, without abandoning the larger ones. These give me an opportunity to say a lot with little as a call to meditate on the small details of life.
