Guided by the serene atmosphere and delicate beauty of the Wingecarribee River's wetlands, my art practice centres on a harmonious communion of personal introspection and painterly exploration. In the early morning, before I embark upon my studio work, I walk along the river's edge. Here, amidst the often overlooked and unseen wetlands, I find solace—a sanctuary that shelters me from the isolating challenges faced by many artists. This daily practice not only nurtures my spirit, but also settles me into a calm and positive mindset, dissolving the distress and strain I may be carrying. It dictates the work. The colours, compositions, and direction of my paintings come directly from these immersive experiences. The flora, the fauna, the distinct visual language of the river, take root in my mind, and these visual nuances of the place grow into the subjects and compositions of each painting. Influenced by the Romanticism movement and the desire to convey beauty, this painting aims to encapsulate the splendour of the wetlands in miniature. The play of light on water, the atmosphere of still dawn, and the interplay of tones seek to echo the intrinsic nature of this environment. Through illuminating the serene beauty and personal significance of these local wetlands, my aim with this painting was to mirror a sense of connection between the human psyche and the natural world—an intimate connection that has the power to regenerate both. Just as the wetlands flourish, providing respite and renewal, my hope is that this artwork serves as a catalyst for viewers to rediscover their own harmonious relationship with the environment and the restorative treasures it holds.
