Artist statement
Nephros, meaning kidney in Greek, is a piece i made after learning that my transplanted kidney i received 13 years ago from my mum, is chronically rejecting. Learning such life changing news makes you re-evaluate what's important in life, and having good health is definitely something many people can take for granted or overlook, as other material things can take precedence. Learning i will need another transplant relatively soon, or to go on dialysis until i find a match, has definitely tested me and my limits not only physically but mentally. Creating my art however has been a constant companion through these good and bad moments, it has been my form of personal therapy to cope with the hurdles life has thrown my way. Although this piece was influenced by a darker time in life, i feel there is hope within it, a tiny beacon of light as seen through the gumnut beginning to flower. This hope signifies that although right now my health struggles may feel at times like a heavy weight on my shoulders, this is not the end, it is only the beginning of another journey that will shape the person i am and will continue to become.
