In the mid-1970s, Eugène Brands left Amsterdam for the rural village of Hulshorst. Inspired by fields and open skies, his work shifted from lyrical abstraction to compositions that more directly evoked the landscape. A bright red sun rises over the horizon, while rhythmic patterns of earth and sky are punctuated by bold black and white forms—a motif often interpreted as cows grazing in the fields.
Although we cannot say with certainty that this piece belongs to Brands’s landscape period, collector Benjamin Bernstein noted on the back of the work that it was acquired in January 1987 and titled Landscape. Whether you see an ice cream topped with a cherry or an idyllic countryside view, Brands conveyed a sense of lightness while showing how abstract forms emerge from everyday life.
