In the mid-1950s, after parting ways with the CoBrA group, Eugène Brands found new inspiration in Paris. His paintings from this period are filled with humor, improvisation, and allusions to the city’s artistic life. Here, the Eiffel Tower situates us firmly in Paris, while the figure with palette and brush may be a self-portrait of sorts. A floating faces and the head of a goat recall Marc Chagall, whom Brands admired, but the spirit is less homage than playful invention. The work reflects Brands’ embrace of painting as a joyful and imaginative act in a moment of transition in his career.
