Reverend Robert DeWitt’s quote refers to President Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal. In 1972, police arrested five burglars attempting to wiretap phones and steal documents at the Democratic National Committee. Investigations later traced Nixon’s involvement and failed cover-up in not only Watergate but also numerous illegal activities, which led to his resignation two years later.
Reverend DeWitt campaigned for racial equality and against the Vietnam War during his time as the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania from 1964 to 1974. The Episcopal Church censured him after he ordained eleven women at Philadelphia’s Church of the Advocate in 1974, two years before the church allowed it.
