This colorful face is Maitin’s interpretation of a minotaur, a creature from Greek mythology. Maitin made this for colleague Ilona Gerbner (Mrs. G), a playwright, director, and teacher at the University of Pennsylvania. Ilona’s husband, George Gerbner, served as Dean of the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication, where all three worked. Ilona Gerbner went on teach in Penn’s Theater Arts Program, and retired in 1989 after a 22-year career.
Maitin’s connection with the University of Pennsylvania dates to 1945 as a night student. He was instrumental in building the visual arts program at Annenberg. Maitin’s 1975 mural Celebration still stands in the Annenberg lobby.
