Ancient Near East, Holy Land, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A wheel-thrown pottery storage jar of a tall, ovoid form with a concave base as well as a pair of flared handles on the sloped shoulder and beneath the thick rim. The exterior is accentuated with yellow-orange glaze that has formed streaks across the exterior. Vessels like this example were used to contain a variety of substances from foodstuffs to wine and medicines. Size: 5.7" W x 6.4" H (14.5 cm x 16.3 cm)
