French Bronze Patine and Marble Neo-Grec Urn
third quarter 19th century, after a design by Alfred Daubree (French, 1817-1885), set with pierced handles terminating in lion's heads, the ovoid body with Moorish borders, decorated with dancing muses on both sides, the foot with a meandering vine, on a double-step Siena marble plinth.

Alfred Daubrée was a distinguished French sculptor and bronze artist, whose life and work left an indelible mark on the world of art during the 19th century. Born in 1817 in Nancy and passing away in 1885 in Paris, Daubrée’s journey as an artist traversed from his hometown to the vibrant artistic hub of Paris, where he achieved notable acclaim for his exquisite bronze creations.

Daubrée’s artistic journey began in Nancy, where he embarked on his career as a sculptor. Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of his surroundings, he honed his craft with dedication and passion, laying the groundwork for his future success. However, it was in Paris where Daubrée’s talent truly flourished, as he immersed himself in the bustling artistic scene of the capital.

In Paris, Daubrée collaborated with renowned artists such as FRATIN and CUMBERWORTH, designing a myriad of exquisite bronze objects that showcased his exceptional skill and artistic vision. His work quickly gained recognition for its impeccable craftsmanship and aesthetic beauty, earning him admiration and acclaim from peers and patrons alike.

The pinnacle of Daubrée’s career came in 1867 when he received an award during the prestigious “L’Exposition Universelle” in Paris. This honor served as a testament to his artistic prowess and solidified his reputation as a master of his craft. Daubrée’s sculptures and bronze pieces became highly sought after, coveted by collectors and art enthusiasts for their timeless elegance and exquisite detailing.

Among Daubrée’s notable works are the Bronze Cherub “Putti” Candelabra, which exemplifies the charm and grace of his craftsmanship in the style of Charles Cumberworth. Additionally, his French Napoleon III Candlesticks stand as elegant exemplars of bronze artistry, showcasing his mastery of form and composition.

One of the most remarkable examples of Daubrée’s work is the Stamped “Daubree” 19th Century French Bronze Tazza. This tazza, adorned with a central intaglio bust of Julius Caesar and intricate detailing, exemplifies Daubrée’s ability to infuse his creations with historical significance and artistic expression.

Daubrée’s legacy continues to endure through these remarkable works, which serve as testaments to his talent and dedication to the art of sculpture and bronze casting. Today, his pieces continue to captivate art enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.
