Virginia Fleck
Blue diagonal by Virginia Fleck Image: I am utilizing can tabs in a way that rescripts the original intention of their branding. The can-tabs in my sculptures are no longer in service to consumerism. In their new incarnation they have a baroque, upcycled aesthetic that playfully transcends their utility. When these kinetic sculptures made from thousands of reflective tabs begin to rotate slowly, shimmering moiré patterns appear and soothe with soft glimmers, activating a visual sensory experience that brings us back to our center. Sensory experiences quell anxiety, awaken our sense of wonder, and provide a healing counterpoint to our reality of overstimulation.
