Victoria Pynt
Canberra, Australia
Abstract nature painter. Lover of colour, trees and cosy wild places.
MessageVictoria is a full-time artist based in Canberra, taking inspiration from regional woodlands and forests where Australia’s unique colour, contrasts and changeability live strong. She specialises in ‘cosy wild places’ such as pockets of the forest understorey or a snippet of riverbank viewed from her kayak. Her works invite viewers to peer in, the same way as when someone speaks softly you lean in and become still to listen.
Victoria is known for rich, soulful, earthy colour. She loves to paint abstract nature with organic forms and lost-and-found edges that speak of the forest’s timelessness and oneness, and impressionist flecks of colour that skip across the canvas as sunlight across leaf, web or wing.
As a nature lover, she prefers sustainable materials. This is why many paintings are on unstretched linen, so there’s no plastic bubblewrap needed for shipping when you buy online. Your artwork arrives in an easy-to-handle, lightweight mailing tube. You will find prices for unstretched works are lower to allow for stretching costs. Formerly known as Victoria Collins.
Statement
I depict landscape interiors; cosy places within the wilderness like the forest underbrush that are all something's habitat. I love delicate details and layers that invite viewers to peer in, the same way as when someone speaks quietly you lean in and become still to listen more closely.
As an artist I find myself in service of the little creatures like birds and insects with whom we share space, and the trees and other plants that support them. As a writer also, I’m excited by the idea of other worlds right under our noses, and stories unfolding without reference to humanity.
For these reasons my work suits domestic homes (which are habitats too!), and where the pieces can hold space to breathe a moment.
A love of rich colour leads me to work in oil paint. I layer from warm darks up to a kaleidoscope of lights that to my mind is the aura of the forest - splitting into the spectrum as it filters through. I like to take a small brush and let it skip across the canvas much as sunlight across leaf, web or wing.
