After traveling to many National Parks formed by layering, uplift, and weathering I thought I would try to mimic this through my piecing technique. I started with different strip sets to indicate the sedimentary layers, then sliced through them and inserted more sets from below to show the uplift that caused mountain formation or Orogeny. Definitely on the edge for me as I did not follow a pattern or use a photo for inspiration – just the idea of how mountains are formed. You could say this is an evolution of traditional strip piecing.
