Gift of John A. Welsh III '59

Scharf was an Abstract Expressionist who painted with thin, translucent layers to achieve his characteristic depth and luminosity no matter his color choice. While color is his focus and principal subject matter, he does so in biomorphic shapes that appear to swirl and swim across the canvas. This mystical quality is similar to that of Surrealist painting, giving his form of Abstract Expressionism a distinct appearance different from his peers.

  • Subject Matter: Abstract
