Palu’s project, "Afghanistan: Garmsir Marines," produced 15 portraits as well as journals and artifacts he collected. Palu’s “Commie” depicts a 20-year old Marine from Las Vegas on his first tour based in Garmsir - a site of heavy fighting. The words “Front towards enemy,” written on his helmet allude to the instructions embossed on remote controlled Claymore mines, detonated during battle and ambushes on troops or unarmored vehicles.
