From Artspace: Hank Willis Thomas' bold, thoughtful, and deeply moving artwork asks us to see and challenge systems of inequality that are woven into the fabric of contemporary life, and urges communities into greater action and participation.
"Twilight’s Last Gleaming" is based on Thomas’ 2021 mixed media work including deconstructed political and identity-based flags and whose title references the U.S. national anthem. Thomas is known for blending historical imagery with contemporary critiques, and "Twilight's Last Gleaming" is no exception. Through this work, he invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of national identity and the unresolved issues of freedom and equality in the U.S.
“When I travel and make work—and often my work is about the United States —I’m doing my part to tell some of the stories of our country: some of the triumphs, many of the struggles that we are yet to overcome, and have overcome.” — Hank Willis Thomas
