From November 11, 1992 to December 19, 1995, the Aryan Republican Army (ARA) carried out twenty-two armed bank robberies in the Midwest. The leaders aimed to fund the white supremacist movement and overthrow the U.S. government.
The ARA was part of a broader white supremacist terrorism movement that has been present in American history through the present. Since 2019, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have acknowledged that white supremacists are the leading domestic terrorism threat.
In his 2021 artist book, Bank Tellers of America versus The Aryan Republican Army (1992-1996), Starr transforms FBI documents into images to highlight the connections between white supremacist ideology, access to weapons, and violent intent. His visualizations of the case against the ARA are based on evidence collected by the FBI. Starr depicts the instrumental role of bank tellers who were terrorized by the ARA. Their efforts identifying the gunmen and testifying against them in court led to successful convictions and the ultimate dismantling of the white supremacist organization.
