Trevor Paglen merges science, astronomy, mass surveillance, investigative journalism, and contemporary art in creating his photographs, videos, and sculptures. "Dead Military Navigation Satellite (Cosmos 985) Near the Disk of the Moon" is part of his ongoing series titled, "The Other Night Sky," in which he locates, observers, and documents technological intrusions into outer space, such as classified military satellites, space debris, and other obscure objects orbiting the planet. Utilizing observational data provided by a network of amateur, international “satellite observers,” Paglen locates and photographs these objects with telescopes, large-format cameras, and computer-guided mounts.
