"My work explores the value and simple inherent beauty of rhythm, anonymity, and constancy; that which appears seemingly insignificant or commonplace, but indisputably present in agrarian worlds.
In farm life 'kitchen' is a verb, rather than a noun and the repetitiveness of living and rhythm of change collide. Island woman is an expert at making a house a home. She is as masterful in the barn as she is in the kitchen. By necessity she is cross-trained in calving, building fence, and harvesting.
Ms. Niemi's essays in their entirety informed my work. The imagery of flowers on the kitchen table as a symbol of rhythm, trustworthiness, and reverence between island woman, her family, and the land. These colorful blossoms seem to offer a simple joyful 'thank you' for her continual care and concern. The winter scene was informed by Ms. Niemi's words; the 'synergistic dance' evoke a singular sacredness of the land."
