Icelandic Farms Exhibit - Glaumbier Turf Farm

This farm is located in Iceland. It is part of a series "Farms of Iceland". As a Nebraskan, I was struck by the similarities of the Icelandic farm to the ranches of Nebraska. In particular this farm, now a historical site, reminded me of the sod homes built on the Nebraska plains. The Nebraska plains were "like an ocean" to the first white settlers. The line "Moored here by choice, they live their lives tenaciously protecting fragile shores, and how to stay is their abiding mission." resonated with me as I know my ancestors who homesteaded and lived in sod houses, fought to make the land, theirs. Like the Icelandic farmer they continue to fight to hold onto the family farm/ranch/land. Like the Icelandic farmer many lived and continue to live in isolated areas surrounded by an "ocean."
