Fine art painter focusing on color and light showcasing my roots in the South! Commissions open!!
MessageTrevor Thomas is from north Alabama. He will graduate with a BFA in visual arts with an emphasis in painting. Trevor began drawing from a very early age and was encouraged by his family and his love of impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Camille Przewodek, and Richard Oversmith. He is intrigued by the effects of color and light and includes impressionist techniques in his work. As a young artist from rural Alabama, Trevor struggled to find serious art instruction close to home. However, his family encouraged him to pursue his interest in art and helped him attend professional workshops with well-known artists such as James Richards, John Ebersberger, and Richard Kelso. Trevor appreciates all that these experiences have brought him and hopes to make art more accessible to all interested students in the future.

Cezanne once said, “For an impressionist to paint from nature is not to paint the subject, but to realize sensations.” As an artist from the rural south with a strong faith background, spending time examining the beauty of the southern landscape and exploring the details of color and light within the subject brings joy to my soul. My goal as an artist is to capture this joy to share with other people.
Early in my exploration as an artist, I was very tight and tedious with my brushwork. The focus on the minute details made painting frustrating at times. However, I began to learn more about the impressionist painters, such as Cezanne, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, and I spent time with a great aunt who is an artist, who encouraged me to loosen up with my painting. I became intrigued by the effects of color and light that inspired the Impressionist movement and began incorporating more of these techniques in my work. As I focused more on these aspects, I began to once again enjoy painting and have worked on my ability to see color and light and my skill in translating these to a canvas.
More recently I have become interested in the colorist approach to painting which was taught by Henry Hensche. This approach incorporates color and light while focusing on a different way of seeing. I recently attended a workshop by John Ebersberger, who studied under Hensche, and although I am just beginning to utilize the skills I learned, I am excited to continue to work with these skills so that I can grow as an artist.
Ultimately, I want to be able to share my work with others through representation in galleries and also by teaching. Coming from a rural area, serious art instruction was hard to come by. Even in my college search, instruction in traditional arts was limited as many colleges have shifted to a digital focus. However, I feel blessed to have been mentored by some excellent artists and people, and I hope to be able to mentor other young, serious artists one day.
I believe that God shares His glory with us through many of the beautiful things that we see, and I want to continue to work and grow as an artist without losing the feeling of joy that painting brings.
