Born in Oklahoma, Fellows was exposed to ranching and the culture of the Otoe and Osage Native Americans from an early age. He is a two-time past president of the Cowboy Association of America, and one of the few artists who has won Gold and Silver medals in both painting and sculpture at the annual Cowboy Artists of America annual exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum.
