Spirits Upended is a piece informed and inspired by the war in Ukraine, which started in 2022.

I used acrylic and ink and developed it by building up layer upon layer.

To come up with the final idea, I put myself in the shoes of having my life pulled from under me, heading towards the unknown to start over. Tough!

People stripped of life as they know it leave everything behind to start on a new path. Scary!

This piece celebrates the only thing that no one can take away, that we will grab onto, and that will go with us no matter where we go; our memories, our feelings, our education, and our souls, which are represented in the shapes inside each figure.

Vibrant colors infuse a sense of optimism, reflecting hope rather than a depiction of despair.

The final process of completing my work often involves meticulously organizing symbols that intersect cultures, objects, and events. Here, I strive to convey balance and coexistence within the artwork and within myself. It is a symbolic journey I embark on to distill the complexities of our world into a hopeful narrative that celebrates harmony and connection.
In this painting, the symbols are organized in the shape of Ukraine's national flower.

50% proceeds went to benefit emergency funds, to groups that are helping the Ukrainian people and the animals in their care.
