Tiffany Matos
American-born visual artist in Luxembourg exploring preservation and impermanence through organic materials and time-based processes.
MessageTiffany Matos is an American-born visual artist based in Luxembourg. Born in New Jersey, she lived in New York from 2007 to 2011 before establishing herself in Europe.
Her work explores the tension between preservation and impermanence through the transformation of natural materials. Using processes such as drying, painting, and resin encapsulation, she creates works that suspend organic elements in time, oscillating between life and fossilization.
Working across painting, photography, sculpture, and video, her practice creates meditative spaces that invite viewers to contemplate memory, stillness, and the passage of time.
Statement
My work begins with a desire to hold onto something that is already disappearing.
I work with organic elements such as leaves and branches, materials that naturally decay, and place them through processes that attempt to preserve them. Drying, painting, and encasing become gestures of resistance against time, yet they never fully stop it. Instead, they transform it.
The resulting works exist in a suspended state, somewhere between life and fossil, natural and constructed. They reflect a quiet tension between what we try to keep and what inevitably fades.
Through this process, I create spaces for pause and contemplation. A way to sit with impermanence, rather than escape it.
