MessageThyra Moore is a Maryland-based acrylic and mixed media artist whose work reflects the resilience and beauty found in transformation. Inspired by the ever-changing rhythms of water and wildlife surrounding her Kent Island waterfront studio, she creates paintings that balance spontaneity with intention, layering color, texture, and dimension to mirror life’s cycles of disruption and renewal.
Her artistic journey is guided by a central question: What does it take to not just survive change—but to become something more because of it? This perspective shapes each piece, inviting viewers to see beyond adversity toward strength, thriving, and possibility.
Moore holds a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA, and has studied under influential artists including John Salminen, Frank Webb, Katherine Chang Liu, Nicholas Wilton, and Gabriel Lipper. Her work has earned numerous accolades, such as Best in Show at District Arts, the ISEA Experimental Art Award, Juror’s Choice at the Maryland Federation of Art, and First Place at the Faber Birren National Color Award Show.
Her paintings have been juried into national and international exhibitions, including Kaleidoscope at the Monmouth Museum, Bodies of Water at @33Contemporary, and Untamed with Art Fluent, and are held in private collections across the U.S. and beyond. She is also an active member of Working Artists Forum, contributing to both local art communities and arts education initiatives.
Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, Moore incorporates unexpected materials to heighten texture and depth. Each work is a visual reflection of resilience, curiosity, and the beauty that emerges from change.
Statement
I paint to explore what it takes to not just survive change—but to become something more because of it.
Life’s layers, disruptions, and transformations fuel my curiosity. I’m drawn to the worn, the weathered, and the overlooked—elements that carry their own resilience. In the studio, I balance spontaneity with intention, building up and breaking down, responding to each mark, texture, and unexpected turn.
Working in acrylic and mixed media, I often incorporate materials that have endured time and trial. These fragments, once discarded, are reimagined into works that speak to renewal and the beauty that emerges from adversity.
My paintings hold a sense of movement and undercurrent—sometimes bold, sometimes reflective. Each piece is an invitation to pause, to connect, and to imagine what thriving through change might look like.
