This number is the Library of Congress’s catalog designation for Art Spiegelman’s Maus. Instead of a conventional name, we chose this numerical designation echoing the tattooed numbers of Holocaust victims. As the person was dehumanized into a number, so the ideas represented by books are devolved into objects for burning. The books trudge up the desolate path to the camp and witness in the distance the smoke of something burning without understanding.
