Common Ground

“Searching for Escape” represents a physical threshold (an emergency exit door), as well as an emotional threshold. The subject of the painting is experiencing an uncomfortable emotion, and rather than walking all the way through the feeling until it can naturally dissipate, she is looking for a quick release from the emotion—a distraction, a numbing—anything to soothe the discomfort.
