You Carry Me by Taylor Bamgbose, Image 1.
"You Carry Me" is a part of my ongoing series, Self-Talk, which explores action- and values-based mantras as tools for cultivating a healthy mindset and encouraging meaningful engagement with the people and places around us. This piece is inspired by the mantra, "I can lean on those who love me." When I think of coming home, I think not only of places, but of people. The ones who see us deeply. The ones who hold space. The people with whom we can be ourselves without hiding, withholding, shrinking, or pretending. It's easy to become too self-reliant, and to think that we only need ourselves. That asking for support from others is a burden. But the truth is that leaning on our loved ones is actually a gift of intimacy. To allow others to see us at our most vulnerable is to show them that we trust them—that we've made a home in them. And hopefully, through that trust, we allow them to build a home in us as well.
