I attended a stone sculpture class near Rutland, Vermont, about seven years ago. The class is located at an old quarry that was the source of marble for many of the official buildings in downtown DC. I believe the Supreme Court building used marble from this quarry. The quarried stone that wasn’t pure white, and so unsuitable for use on building exteriors, was left behind at the quarry.
I selected several of these discarded pieces because I thought the veining added so much character to the stone and, in turn, to any finished sculpture. This sculpture is made using the last of the stone blocks I purchased.
I have not done a piece as technically difficult as this before. I hand-carved this out of a 6”x6”x6” cube of Vermont marble. Cutting out the center while maintaining the swirl of the piece was an enjoyable challenge. To celebrate its completion, I made a vodka martini with a lemon zest as a garnish.
