After a 40-year career in software development, I have spent the past 10 years working with stone. I started with letter cutting and added stone sculpture to my repertoire. I have produced pieces in slate, basalt, green stone and marble.
I have taken several sculpture courses. Most recently, a two-week marble sculpture course In Italy near the world-famous Carrara marble quarry. This course was led by Kyle Ann Smith, a well-known sculptor with over 30 years’ experience.
I took a course in sculpting the human form using clay in Florence, Italy, in 2020, a marble sculpture course held in Vermont in 2018, and a letter cutting class also held in Vermont in 2015.
I enjoy carving organic forms rather than those that are purely abstract. Birds, sailboats, seashells, etc., are all subjects I have selected for my sculptures. I am not a hyper-realistic sculptor. I try to focus on how the original subject has left an impression on me. Combining that with the innate quality of the stone I selected, I try to pass that feeling on to the viewer in my sculptures.
