Arnold says... This is my favorite piece I did while living near Bar Harbor Maine. I was walking my beach looking for a piece of stone to carve when I saw the natural quartz (now the bow wave) and immediate saw this sculpture in the boulder. Since it was a large stone, it was quite an ordeal but I managed to move it up to my outdoor studio.
Basalt is a very hard and dense stone. It is difficult to carve but it can hold a deep polish. The veining and colors in basalt can be very beautiful.
This piece is a play between the positive and negative space of a sailboat. The hull is represented by the bow wave, water flowing down the length of the vessel, and the void of displaced water. I tried to give this sculpture a sense of the fullness of the sails, the power of the wind driving the vessel forward, and the speed of a boat on a beam reach.
