Cindy Winnick is a sculptor whose work combines color, texture, and form to create dynamic characters that pose questions about modern life. Her unique medium of soft sculpture incorporates colored fabrics, wire, and ready-made or decorative objects, giving her figures an animated energy often infused with humor.
Winnick’s artistic journey began in Paris in the late 1980s, where she focused on painting before expanding her practice to sculpture. She furthered her education at the New York Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, developing a deep interest in the human figure. Initially working with clay, she studied under Brazilian sculptor Jahlido Marinho in Paris and Annaliese Rudolph in Berlin, refining her technical and creative approach.
In 2015, inspired by a workshop with Virginia artist Melissa Ichiuji, Winnick shifted her focus to soft sculpture, where she found a new medium to express her ideas. Her work often explores contemporary themes, creating characters that are as playful as they are contemplative.
Winnick lives and works in Annapolis, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. She maintains a studio in the historic Eastport neighborhood, where she continues to push the boundaries of soft sculpture, blending artistic innovation with thoughtful commentary.
