This vessel comes from the Santa Clara tribe in New Mexico. This vessel keeps within ceramic tradition of the tribe, with the shiny black finish on the outside and the incised designs around the middle section. What is unique about this vessel is the incised flower carvings on the back of it, revealing the terra cotta clay underneath the black exterior. This artist, Lucy Year Flower Tafoya, married into the Santa Clara tribe. She began making pottery in the 1970s and used a method traditional to the Santa Clara but also newer techniques such as sgraffito. The artist's signature can be found on the bottom of this vessel along with her birth tribe and the tribal society she married into.
