MessageThis small bowl comes from the Jemez nation in new Mexico. Jemez ceramics are unique in the sense that they are all mostly from contemporary artists. The Jemez ceased ceramic production in the eighteenth century and ceramic consumerism existed solely through trade with other nations. In the late twentieth century, the Jemez started producing their own original ceramics again. Classified by their red, tan, and black pigments as well as their natural design, Jemez pottery is quite unique. This vessel displays all the traditional characteristics of Jemez pottery, from the coloring to the designs on the exterior. The bottom of the vessel is signed "F. Waqui, Jemez" giving the artist's name and nation.
