MessageThis bowl comes from the Hopi nation in Arizona. Hopi ceramics are unique for their ability to change color in the firing process. Gray clay produces yellow/tan wares (as seen in this vessel), and yellow clay produces red wares. Hopi pottery is also characterized by natural designs such as wildlife and plant life, as well as symbols. In this vessel, the black painted natural designs cover the exterior of the bowl. The bottom of the bowl is signed "B. Mahn, Hopi, First Village ..." revealing the artist and the nation in which is came from.
