Terri and her husband Dave live with their two active dogs and a very sleepy cat in Madison,WI. She is a graduate of UW-Madison, a lifelong Wisconsinite and delights in the beauty of the Midwestern landscape, particularly that of Northern Door County and of Central Wisconsin. As she states, “It gets into your very bones.”
Her passion for painting was ignited while in high school but it wasn’t until midlife that she returned to seriously pursue art making. She calls it a second half of life pivot! Being part of a vibrant art community has taught, inspired and helped her to stay true to her artistic voice and call to create.
Terri is drawn to abstract mixed medium painting, focusing on color, shape, layering, textures and marks. For her, the process is very intuitive, spiritual and interactive as the work unveils itself. Each painting becomes a place of discovery and hopefully invites the viewer into that as well.
Statement
Art-making takes me into to a space that feels a bit like a kid discovering a new world hidden right within the neighborhood. There’s a sense of wonder, playfulness, and most importantly a certain curiosity.
Painting allows a freedom to interact with the medium and subject via color, brushwork, texture and mark making. The natural landscape, especially of Wisconsin and areas I have traveled tend to be my most frequent sources of inspiration. My mixed medium paintings reflect a process of adding and removing layers in order to create a history in the painting. Working abstractly also provides glimpses into the human inner landscape.
To create work that is hopeful, authentic and expressive is my goal. My motto is "Art for Everyone", reflecting a desire that art be accessible to all.
