From my Horror Film Club series, this piece was made while I watched/listened to The Surfer (2024), in which Nicolas Cage played an increasingly desperate man trying to return to his childhood beach. This is a surrealist portrait of Nicolas Cage's character in the oversaturated film. Directed by Irish filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan, the film places the American-accented Cage in Australia, the titular character’s childhood home. Themes of belonging, displacement, dissonance, and insider/outsider dynamics abound. As a classically trained portrait artist, a decades-long Nicholas Cage fan, and an immigrant in self-imposed exile from my home country, I relished the experience of making this drawing.
