Tara Leaver
Cornwall
Contemporary abstract landscape painter and online art teacher living in Cornwall, UK
MessageOriginally from London, Tara Leaver is an artist and teacher living by the sea in Cornwall, UK. After completing a Foundation Diploma in London in her early twenties, her regular art practice took a back seat to travel and various forms of employment, including six years teaching Montessori.
She moved to Hove and resumed painting in 2008, embarking on a period of intensive study and development, both formally and privately. Moving again, this time to Cornwall, in 2017, saw her work - always inspired by ideas of freedom and coastal living - evolve to focus on her deep love of sea swimming and immersion in wild nature.
As a result of her years of exploring art as a means of self discovery and self expression, Tara began teaching online in 2013. Having these two strands to her work - her own practice and the courses she offers - brings a rich diversity to her life as an artist.
Tara has exhibited in galleries in Sussex, Cornwall, and the Cotswolds, and her work is owned by private collectors in Europe, Australia, the USA, Canada and Africa. Her work can currently be seen in Tin Coast Design in Penzance, as well as online.

Statement
I’m happiest near - or preferably in - the sea, where I swim as often as I can. I immerse myself in the multi-sensory experience of it, taking photos underwater, looking and feeling into the abundance of life above and below the waves. Back in the studio, I weave together elements from the photos, memories, and gathered seaweed, to distill those experiences into paintings.
Liquid, dynamic paint layers of varying consistencies are combined with fleeting, but more carefully drawn or carved glimpses of recognisable elements of aquatic life, from the birds overhead to the seaweed below. I challenge myself to create something unexpected in each painting, something that prompts a second look; I work until every piece expresses what feels like a truth about the pleasures and surprises of immersion in wild nature.
