One block of family homes in the wheatbelt town of Lake Grace. I was told of a commissioned report from a government department that says our town will not exist in 10 years. Towns and farms in the agricultural regions are interlinked in a way that is inseparable. There is no doubt that international corporate entities are gradually swallowing up small family farms. Family farms are also becoming larger in acreage. However, it concerns me that government departments are making decisions on supplying services with faulty information. Our town will be here in 10 years time. These are not statistical numbers they are people with families, lives and important jobs for the country.
During COVID our remoteness has been a benefit, regional isolation means agriculture continues to produce food to feed the nation and the world. Isolation of a small country town is a timely reminder for governments to reevaluate. Services are vital.
