Kelp.
This work was initially derived from the collection of the shells I inherited from my grandmother. When I stayed with Nan and Pop we would explore their collection of beautiful shells and corals. This gave me a love for the shapes and patterns of marine life; fluid lines and waves of wire. I think about the gentle movement of the Kelp under the water by the swell and waves.
A marine heatwave over the 2010/2011 summer, in combination with southward movement of subtropical fishes associated with ocean warming, resulted in the loss of Ecklonia radiata (the dominant kelp across the GSR) and Scytothalia dorycarpa forests from ∼100 km of coastline between Kalbarri and Geraldton.
