Located in Apex Park, Stubbs St, Lake Grace
Commissioned by the Shire of Lake Grace to mark the Lake Grace flood event of 2006 that isolated the town for 6 weeks.
The wording on the sculpture reads:
+ Cyclone Clare dumps 233mm of rain in 36hrs on the district of Lake Grace from January 12th 2006. The ancient chains of usually dry lakes fill with water.
+ Homes flood. The town is isolated all four entrance roads are closed. Creeks become rivers, water tops the fence posts. Dams burst. Sheep drown.
+ Visitors try to drive through deep water, warnings unheeded; they have to leave their stranded cars. Boat is the only way to school or work for some.
+ The community pulls together to drain Cemetery Lake. They tidy the town, mend the fences, fix the dams and bury the sheep. The roads are opened again.
+ Water birds come in the thousands. They stay for two years. We have picnics by the floodwaters. We learn how to water-ski and we paddle on the lakes.
