Maritime pine (pinus pinaster) – friend or foe to the environment?
Dense thickets of these invasive pines suppress native plants and alter the habitats of animals; you can see the pines proliferating into natural bushland near plantations. Yet, they are valuable as a renewable resource, saving our forests from logging and are of benefit in lowering the rising water table caused by past land clearing practices.
